TWM Short Shifters

Awesome quality !!! Installed one for with a friend today and I was quite impressed with the build quality. Local company (QC based) and except for the cutting of plastic to compensate for movement (which is somewhat expected with short shifters) the install was quite painless. The linkage itself is crafted like a showpiece which doesnt quite make sense considering its not in any way visible... but a five out of five for quality !!!

The Blackiston

Story thanks to Hemmings Auto Blogs - Is this an old school John Hennessey ;) Sorry, his viper might be cool but I think the mans an idiot.

Anybody who’s lazily flipped through the Standard Catalog has surely stopped and ogled the entry for the 1912 Blackiston, from Canton, Ohio. This was a behemoth of a car, described both as a runabout and as appearing “as big as a locomotive.” G.P. Blackiston apparently built it himself, using the chassis from an unidentified racing car. What engine he fitted into that chassis remains a mystery, other than its rating of 90hp, but it had to have been massive to warrant two radiators and a hood that measured seven-and-a-half feet long and five-and-a-half feet high. Blackiston said he expected the car to be able to reach 137 MPH (at a time when the world’s absolute land speed record stood at 125.94 MPH), and told The Automobile Journal that he intended neither to race or enter production with his car, just “to find enjoyment in making long-distance tours therein.”

Which is good. Because with the one car he built, he killed a woman.

Tracking down information on the Blackiston reads more like a true crime story than an auto legend. George P. Blackiston (his last name was often misspelled Blackistone) was apparently born in Maryland in 1879, and married Florence M. Day, with whom he had two children, William George Blackiston and Elizabeth Blackiston, born in 1906 and 1908, respectively. By the time of Elizabeth’s birth, he was the president of the Board of Directors and general manager of the Pittsburgh Automatic Vise and Tool Co. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

By late 1910, Blackiston appeared to have made a name for himself as a great advertiser and promoter. Bankers Magazine wrote of him:

To-day Mr. Blackiston stands as a sort of consulting specialist in the advertising field and has controlled the publicity campaigns of some of the largest firms in the country.

Another source of the day reported his nickname as “Live Wire.”

That resume then landed Blackiston a much-heralded position as advertising manager at the Berger Manufacturing Company in Canton, Ohio, a company that “covers the entire field of sheet metal products from the sheet to the finished article.” The position must’ve afforded him plenty of spare time and pocket change, enough to put together his massive car.

We next see Mr. Blackiston appear in the automotive trade journals in late 1912 at the wheel of his runabout. The Automobile Journal wrote that

As the hood towers above the driver’s head, the only direct view to the front is at one side of the car, but the ingenious placing of mirrors is expected to overcome this difficulty.

Not so much. On March 31, 1913, while driving his car through the streets of Canton, he struck and killed Mrs. Edith Huth, 18, recently married and at that moment boarding a streetcar. Charged with manslaughter, Blackiston also faced a civil suit from Edith’s husband, Edward S. Huth, who alleged in the suit that Blackiston

was driving the automobile at a dangerous speed, of from 20 to 30 miles an hour; that the machine had a hood 5 feet 7 inches high; that it was driven on the left side of the road, and that no warning was given Mrs. Huth of its approach.

Newspaper reports of the day indicate that Blackiston settled the civil suit for $5,000, a fifth of the damages that Edward Huth claimed, and that he pled guilty to the manslaughter charge that fall, but received a suspended sentence, thanks to Huth’s request for leniency.

Interestingly, Huth may very well be the same Edward Huth who, according to a 1914 issue of The Horseless Age, formed the Stark Automobile Company (Stark County, Ohio, includes the city of Canton) to distribute and sell the Allen automobile.

A one-paragraph report in the January 7, 1915, issue of Printer’s Ink, an advertising journal, noted that Berger replaced Blackiston with another advertising manager. Blackiston’s wife apparently divorced him and remarried not long after; Blackiston himself reappeared in February 1919 as the head of the advertising department of the American Rubber & Tire Co. in Akron, Ohio. The car remains unaccounted for.

I drive a 997 gen 911 !

My obsession with Porsche will never really end. I like modified street cars and sport compacts for what they are, quick and unreliable - but thats exactly why they're fun. And then theres a Porsche. It just doesnt compare. You get in, and its an experience of its own. From the treadplate to the wheel to the dash, everythings just exquisite.

My girlfriend's boss (who by the way happens to be an all-round awesome guy) passed me the keys to his 911 last night on the way to his house from dinner. Its white, on white wheels, 6-speed manual (the way cars should be, although they're becoming an extinct species lately...) and I had yet another arousing encounter of the porsche kind.

Key goes on the left (porsche tradition, started in le mans to give the drivers a quicker start+launch) so its a touch awkward to start with ur left hand. The only thing that REALLY caught me off guard was the clutch. When depressed it seemed to stop in another time zone, and engagement was almost at the point of complete release... VERY smooth nevertheless, and unlike the Cayman S I drove I didn't stall it... ahaha yeah yeah laugh it out. Seating position takes some getting used to, my Impreza has a high and commanding position where I was low and back in this. Poeple drive aggressively around Porsches, as I encountered for the few minutes that I actually drove the speed limit.

The speedo was quite small... and in 50km increments which is a little distracting because it just encourages you to mash it. Which I did for a little while, in doing so missing our exit and having to drive farther... oh no... ;)

Suspension was STIFF. It was on winter tires so that may have added to the feel, but it was wonderful. I thought my suspension was stiff... this gave me a good 50% more feel of each and every bump and pebble on the road - BUT kept it comfortable ! And speaking of comfort the seats just love to hug you. gf's boss is a good 50lbs over me and I can only imagine how snug the seats must fit him... at 140lbs the seat had NO give in terms of letting me slide around.

Motor - just rev-happy... blips with absolute ease, it really seems happy in the high rpms. To give u an idea the impreza sits at around 2500 rpms on top gear at 120km/h. The 911 was around 3500 at the same speed and gear ! Torqueband was awesome - mash it in 6th and it just picks up and goes. No turbo-lag ;)

To sum it up, I need to do some budgeting for the next year....

This rock's roots can be traced back to the Mayan civilization, where the owl was a worshipped entity that represented the human artform of beatboxing.

Also the Impreza that ran NBR24H

Blackberry Pearl is retired...

My trusty blackberry pearl is now officially retired from my use... but may re-emerge in a family members/friends hands... or remain in storage as a backup phone. A Storm is in the house... nope, not the '2', the Storm, FIRST one. I quite love the surepress, which some people (including reviewers) didnt seem to like. Still getting used to my fat fingers hitting the right keys on the touch-screen, its currently charging at home (initial charge after total drain). Bit heavy compared to the pearl (obviously) but fits nicely. 8gb memory came with it, I can be held accountable for some amateur driving videos this winter...

HDR looks cool but seriously ?

Every new picture posted on forums these days are either HDR or a rolling shot. Rolling shots are still cool considering they have to be done right with a rig. but HDR is getting old... and annoying... can't we just all go back to regular hi-res and photographic talent as opposed to mediocre shots in HDR ?

Training

Still hanging in there. 140 even. I think I'm finally at a comfortable weight, even through some binging I'm constant. Water intake has suffered a little the past few weeks. Goal for January - Turkish getups with a quarter a side on the barbell. Pulled off 20lbs a side last week, shoulders were traumatized today from a prior chest workout so I couldn't do the same. Next week, 22.5lbs. Even if I rip my shoulder out, I'm doing it !
