I drive a 997 gen 911 !
My obsession with Porsche will never really end. I like modified street cars and sport compacts for what they are, quick and unreliable - but thats exactly why they're fun. And then theres a Porsche. It just doesnt compare. You get in, and its an experience of its own. From the treadplate to the wheel to the dash, everythings just exquisite.
My girlfriend's boss (who by the way happens to be an all-round awesome guy) passed me the keys to his 911 last night on the way to his house from dinner. Its white, on white wheels, 6-speed manual (the way cars should be, although they're becoming an extinct species lately...) and I had yet another arousing encounter of the porsche kind.
Key goes on the left (porsche tradition, started in le mans to give the drivers a quicker start+launch) so its a touch awkward to start with ur left hand. The only thing that REALLY caught me off guard was the clutch. When depressed it seemed to stop in another time zone, and engagement was almost at the point of complete release... VERY smooth nevertheless, and unlike the Cayman S I drove I didn't stall it... ahaha yeah yeah laugh it out. Seating position takes some getting used to, my Impreza has a high and commanding position where I was low and back in this. Poeple drive aggressively around Porsches, as I encountered for the few minutes that I actually drove the speed limit.
The speedo was quite small... and in 50km increments which is a little distracting because it just encourages you to mash it. Which I did for a little while, in doing so missing our exit and having to drive farther... oh no... ;)
Suspension was STIFF. It was on winter tires so that may have added to the feel, but it was wonderful. I thought my suspension was stiff... this gave me a good 50% more feel of each and every bump and pebble on the road - BUT kept it comfortable ! And speaking of comfort the seats just love to hug you. gf's boss is a good 50lbs over me and I can only imagine how snug the seats must fit him... at 140lbs the seat had NO give in terms of letting me slide around.
Motor - just rev-happy... blips with absolute ease, it really seems happy in the high rpms. To give u an idea the impreza sits at around 2500 rpms on top gear at 120km/h. The 911 was around 3500 at the same speed and gear ! Torqueband was awesome - mash it in 6th and it just picks up and goes. No turbo-lag ;)
To sum it up, I need to do some budgeting for the next year....
